Understand the Accounts

NPS offers two types of accounts. Tier I is mandatory for retirement planning, while Tier II is a voluntary savings account with high liquidity.

  • Tax Benefits: Eligible for tax deductions under Sec 80C & 80CCD(1B).

  • Withdrawal Rules: Restricted. Upon turning 60, up to 60% can be withdrawn tax-free, 40% mandatory for annuity.

  • Minimum Contribution: ₹500 for initial account opening; minimum ₹1,000 per financial year.

  • Tax Benefits: No tax benefits available, but offers completely flexible withdrawals.

  • Withdrawal Rules: Unrestricted. Can be withdrawn at any time without penalty or exit load.

  • Minimum Contribution: ₹1,000 for initial account opening; minimum ₹250 per contribution.

Yes, partial withdrawals are allowed under specific conditions such as higher education of children, marriage, purchase of a house, or medical emergencies. You can withdraw up to 25% of your own contributions after completing 3 years in the scheme.
